Windows Live Messenger error 80048820

"Error 80048820: You can't sign in to Windows Live Messenger."

You may not be able to sign in because of a problem with Internet connectivity, your firewall (A security feature designed to help protect a computer from unauthorized external access. It can be hardware, software, or both.) , date and time settings, proxy settings, security settings, or SSL security. The server may also be temporarily unavailable.

How to fix this msn error 80048820 ?

To troubleshoot the problem, try these steps in the following:

  1. Check your Internet connection

Visit another website to confirm that you're connected to the Internet. If you can't connect to a website, contact your ISP (Internet service provider. A company that provides access to the Internet.) or your local network administrator.

  2. Check your firewall settings

    a. Go to http://people.live.com  or the Windows Live Hotmail website.

    b. Click Messenger near the top of the page, and then click Sign in to Messenger (Web).

If you can sign in to Messenger on the web, but Windows Live Messenger still can't access the Internet, Windows Live Messenger might be blocked by a firewall. You might need to add MSNmsgr.exe to your firewall's allow list. For more information, see your firewall's documentation or website.

  3. Check the Windows Live Messenger network status

The Windows Live Messenger service may be temporarily unavailable. Check the Windows Live Messenger network status on the Windows Live Messenger Network Status website, and then try to sign in again later.

  4. Check your Windows Internet Explorer proxy settings

If you can't connect to the Internet, confirm that your proxy settings in Internet Explorer are correct. You may have to contact your ISP or network administrator to find out the correct settings. To clear your proxy settings in Internet Explorer:

    1> Start Internet Explorer.

2> On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3> On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.

4> Clear the Automatically detect settings check box.

5> Click OK, and then click OK again.

  5. Clear your Messenger proxy settings

    1> Start Messenger.

2> On the Tools menu, click Options.

3> In the left pane, click Connection.

4> Under Connection, click Advanced Settings.

5> Delete the entries under SOCKS.

6> Click OK, and then click OK again.

  6. Check your Internet Explorer security settings

    1> Start Internet Explorer.

2> On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3> On the Advanced tab, in the Security section, make sure that the Check for server certificate revocation check box is cleared. Also, make sure that the Use SSL 2.0 and the Use SSL 3.0 check boxes are selected.

    4> Click OK.

  7. Check the date and time settings

1> For Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
    — or —
For Windows Vista, on the taskbar, click the Start button, and then click in the Start Search box.

2> Type control timedate.cpl, and then press ENTER.

3> In the Date and Time Properties dialog box, confirm that the date and time settings on your computer are correct, and then click OK.

  8. Reregister the SSL security libraries

1> In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
    — or —
In Windows Vista, click Start, click in the Start Search box, and then type command prompt. Under Programs, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

2> Type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command.

    Note
After each command, you'll receive a message stating that the command was successful. Wait until you receive this message before you type the next command. Some of the following DLL files aren't included in Windows Vista. If you receive a message stating that the specified module can't be found, move to the next command.
