Fix Laptop Screen Black Suddenly

A few days ago, I wrote a laptop screen messed up article. I want to say some details for you on that day. When my computer screen messed up, then I closed my pc for about 10 minutes. I was surprised that I could boot and login into the desktop. But unfortunately, my pc messed up again after running for dozens of minutes and my laptop screen went black at the same time. My pc wouldn't boot and the screen kept black from then on. If you have the same issue to me, I suggest you that don't reboot your laptop when it was black, because it is easy to burn out the graphics card due to the high temperature. If you have the laptop black screen problems, please try the following steps to troubleshoot:

  • 1. Full scan computer viruses: Generally, first we should check the software issues. If you can boot and login into your computer, full scanning your system viruses/trojan with anti-virus software in Safe mode. The viruses or trojan can damage the system files, it is easy to cause the computer black screen or desktop shortcuts won't open issues if you haven't repaired the damaged system files. In contrast, this probability is relatively small.

  • 2. Update your graphics driver: Maybe the display driver is not compatible with the graphics card. Please read our display driver problems help page to learn how to fix.

  • 3. Clean the connecting finger of Memory: You should check the hardwares issues if the laptop won't boot. If you are using the low-quality of the memory, it will be easily oxidized by oxygen in the air for about half a year and causing poor contact. You can clean the connecting finger with eraser or absolute alcohol. For notebook computer, it is relatively easy to remove the memory.

  • 4. Clean the CPU fan and enhance cooling: This is the most important reason that leading to pc black screen suddenly. If the black screen occurred when you were playing games or watching movies, the main reason is overheating which leading to graphics card and CPU overheating to force a shutdown and protect your pc. So, you need to clean up the dust of the CPU fan, then add a little cooling gel to keep the CPU fan running better. You also need to clean the connecting finger of the video card and check that if the memory, graphics card, hard disk, data lines and other equipment are inserted firmly. You'd better buy a notebook cooler to help cooling. Note: Don't do it if you do not know how to disassemble notebook. You can click here to search how to "disassemble notebook" video on youtube.com.

  • 5. Repair or replace the video card: Maybe the graphics chips have been incomplete welded because of the long-term poor cooling. If it is the ATI graphics chips which need to be re-welded on it by the professional maintenance staff; If it is the NVIDIA graphics chips which need to be replaced for a new and improved version of the graphics chip. Note: Don't do it yourself, you'd better repair/replace it by the professional maintenance staff. Moreover, it will not cost you too much :)

  • Other :

Monitor: If you are using the LCD monitor, under normal circumstances, you can use it for about 5 years; If the CRT monitor, about for 8-10 years. Think of that how many years of your notebook has been used?

Power supply: The voltage instability may also lead to a black screen on laptop. You can change to another power supply to test it.

Overheating is the main reason to cause the black screen of death. So, if you have repaired this issue, please remember some following points: Don't always play the big games on your laptop; Install a temperature detection computer software to detect the temperature(CPU/graphics card/hard disks) on your laptop, if you see the the temperature is too high, please take measures to cool it down. Click here to install the free program "SpeedFan" on cnet.com; Clean up the dust of your notebook at least once a year, this is necessary.
