When you try to install
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may receive the following
error message:
- "Windows Vista Service Pack
1 cannot be installed on your computer because the language of
Windows Vista you have installed is not supported or you have
installed a language pack that is not supported.
Windows Vista Service pack 1 can only be installed on computers
running the English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish
versions of Windows Vista or computers running only those
language packs."
Additionally, the following entries
are logged in the %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file:

Note The %windir% placeholder specifies the path where
Windows is installed. Typically, C:\Windows is the path where
Windows is installed.
Cause: This problem
occurs when you try to install a language version of Windows Vista
Service Pack 1 that is not supported by the currently installed
version of Windows Vista.
How to fix?
To work around this
computer problem, use one of the following methods:
- Method 1
Install the stand-alone package of Windows Vista SP1 that
contains 36 languages.
- Method 2
If the default system language is English, German, Spanish,
French, or Japanese, you can remove any language packs that are
not supported, other than English, German, French, Japanese or
Spanish. To remove a language pack, follow these steps:
1. Click Start,
type language in
the Start Search
box, and then click
Regional and Language Options in the
Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a
confirmation, type your password, or click
Continue.
2. Click the Keyboards
and Languages tab, and then click
Install/uninstall
languages in the
Display language area.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a
confirmation, type your password, or click
Continue.
3. Click Remove
languages, click to select the check boxes for the
language packs that you want to remove, and then click
Next.
4. Click Remove,
and then click Restart
now after the removal process is completed.
