And install the other programs/softwares to the D drive or other disk. Because keep the C: drive simple will make the system run more smoothly.
3) Shortcuts on the desktop: Do not put more than 10 shortcuts on your desktop, because the shortcuts on your desktop take up the cache, and too many icons on the desktop will reduce the speed of system startup. If you feel inconvenient, you can put them into a same folder. Try to keep the desktop simple.
4) Clean up computer junk files: You can try the CCleaner tool to remove junk files, such as internet browsing traces, the traces of recently opened files... I used it once a day, and I can clean up about 100MB. And you can clean up the windows registry with the registry mechanic software when there are lots of useless and obsolete registry files in your windows system.
5) Upgrade hardwares: If the memory is too small, the speed of your winxp will be much faster after you extend the memory. Replace the graphics card, upgrade the CPU, try to improve your computer's hardware configuration.
Others:
Computer has the virus: If your xp computer suddenly slows down, maybe your pc is infected with virus, you need to full scan and remove the virus in safe mode.

Too many start items: This will affect the xp startup speed.

Uninstall the unnecessary softwares/programs: Uninstall them with the right way. You can go "Control Panel" > "Add or Remove Programs" > uninstall them which you don't need.
